Priligy 60mg contains dapoxetine, which is a fast-acting selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), used to treat premature ejaculation (PE). This medication was initially developed as an antidepressant, however, unlike other SSRIs, this treatment is rapidly absorbed and eliminated from the body. This makes it an ideal treatment for PE, particularly for men between the ages of 18 and 64 years.

PE is a common sexual health issue that affects about 30% of men. It is defined as having an intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT) of less than about 2 minutes. On average, the time to ejaculation is 5 minutes and 30 seconds. Regular or persistent early ejaculation with very little stimulation is usually characterised by poor control over ejaculation, personal distress and relationship problems.

This medication significantly improves control over ejaculation and increases the amount of time it takes to ejaculate. It works by enhancing the activity of serotonin in the central nervous system, or CNS. Serotonin has several different functions in the body, including the transmission of signals that lead to ejaculation. This medication has the ability to double or even triple the amount of time it takes to ejaculate.

In a clinical study that was published in 2006, the efficacy and tolerability of on-demand use of this medication was assessed in patients with PE. In this placebo-controlled study, men with moderate to severe cases of PE who were in stable, heterosexual relationships were included in the research.

A total of 870 participants were given placebo, 870 received dapoxetine 60mg and 874 received 30mg of this treatment for PE. They were told to take their treatments as needed, 1 - 3 hours before planned sexual activity. The main measure of efficacy in the study was intravaginal ejaculatory latency time which was determined by stopwatch.

The study lasted 12 weeks and 672 men in the placebo group completed the research. Six hundred and ten patients who received 60mg dose of this medication completed the study, while 676 in the 30mg group finished the research. The results showed that this medication significantly prolonged ejaculation time. The following results were recorded:

  • At the beginning of the study, the 30mg treatment group had an average IELT of about 55 seconds. After treatment, this had increased to about 167 seconds.
  • At the beginning of the study, the 60mg treatment group had an average IELT of nearly 55 seconds. After treatment, this had increased to nearly 200 seconds.

The study concluded that on-demand treatment with this medication was effective and generally well tolerated for men with moderate to severe cases of PE. Both 30mg and 60mg doses were found to be effective. The main side effects experienced by participants in the study were as follows:

  • 30mg dose - nausea (8.7%), diarrhoea (3.9%), headache (5.9%), dizziness (3.0%)
  • 60mg dose - nausea (20.1%), diarrhoea (6.8%), headache (6.8%), dizziness (6.2%)

You can order Priligy online and have the same effective treatment that was used in this research. The branded version is available as well as generic Priligy which is a fraction of the price, yet bioequivalent and equally effective.

WHO MAKES PRILIGY?

This medication was originally produced by Eli Lilly and Company. In 2003, it was sold to Johnson & Johnson and a new application for its use was submitted to the FDA for the treatment of PE. This medication is marketed by various companies as a safe, oral treatment that is indicated for PE.

IS PRILIGY SAFE?

In general, it is safe for most patients to take a Priligy tablet to effectively treat PE. However, like most medicines, it can cause side effects although not every patient experiences them. The following table contains some of the most common Priligy side effects and what to do if you experience them:

Adverse reactions that may affect about 1 in 10 patients How to manage this side effect
Feeling light-headed or dizzy Drink more water than usual to prevent dehydration. Caffeine and alcohol can also cause dehydration so they should ideally be avoided. For some men, lying down until the dizziness passes may be the best option.
Nausea (feeling sick) Take this medication with at least one full glass of water to reduce the chance of nausea. Taking this medication with food may also help prevent this side effect.
Headache It is safe to take this medication with traditional painkillers like paracetamol to treat a headache.

Although this medication is safe for most people, certain groups of patients with underlying health conditions are advised to avoid treatment or take extra care. Do not use generic Priligy 60mg or the branded version if you have:

  • Serious heart problems
  • A history of fainting
  • Mania or severe depression
  • Severe liver problems

Use this medication with extra caution and take a lower dose, particularly at the beginning of treatment if you have:

  • A history of dizziness from low blood pressure
  • A mental health condition like depression
  • Problems with kidney function

Certain medications including monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), lithium, linezolid, tryptophan and St John's wort should not be taken concurrently with this medication. Patients are advised to wait 14 days after discontinuing treatment with these medications before taking dapoxetine tablets. Once you stop taking this treatment for PE, you are advised to wait 7 days before taking any of the abovementioned treatments.

ARE THERE ANY PRILIGY ALTERNATIVES?

Phosphodiesterase type 5, or PDE5, inhibitors such as Viagra (sildenafil), Cialis (tadalafil) and Levitra are primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction, or ED. However, research has found that they can also be used as a Priligy alternative to treat PE. In addition, PDE5 inhibitors and generic Priligy are often taken at the same time to simultaneously treat ED and PE.

A controlled trial took place to assess the effects of vardenafil on intravaginal ejaculatory latency (IELT) time in men with lifelong PE. Altogether, 42 men between the ages of 18 and 35 years were enrolled in the 16-week study. They were given vardenafil 10mg to take on demand or inactive placebo sex pills so the effects between the two treatments could be compared.

The main measure of efficacy was the change in IELT at the beginning of the study compared to the end and this was evaluated with a stopwatch technique. Other assessment tools were also used including the Index of Premature Ejaculation questionnaire. This questionnaire is a reliable way of assessing a patient's distress with PE, control over ejaculation and overall satisfaction with sex.

The results of the study showed that, compared with placebo, there were significant increases in average IELT. Patients who were given vardenafil reported remarkable improvements in the following:

  • ejaculatory control
  • overall sexual satisfaction
  • PE distress scores
  • post-ejaculatory refractory time

Another Priligy alternative that is sometimes used is tramadol. This medication is primarily used as a pain reliever, but there is evidence to support its use in the treatment of PE. A clinical trial that was published in 2006 was carried out to assess the safety and efficacy of tramadol in the treatment of PE.

A total of 64 men with PE were involved in the 8-week study. They were divided into two groups whereby group 1 consisted of half the participants and they received tramadol 50mg. Group 2 consisted of the remaining half and they were given placebo pills which have no effect. The men took their treatments about 2 hours before sexual activity.

The efficacy of the treatments was assessed using various questionnaires including an intravaginal ejaculatory latency time evaluation. The results showed that the average time to ejaculation increased as follows:

  • For inactive placebo, ejaculation time increased from 21 seconds to 34 seconds after treatment.
  • For tramadol, ejaculation time increased from 19 seconds to 243 seconds (about 4 minutes) after treatment.

With tramadol treatment, the average weekly frequency of sexual activity also increased from about once a week to more than twice a week. Therefore, there are some alternatives to this medicine for the treatment of PE. However, generic Priligy remains a popular choice due to its affordable price and high efficacy rate.
